This is a landscape from 1914 by Albert Gleizes, and the title points to its subject: a tree and a river, seen in the Cubist manner. Gleizes was a French artist and writer who considered himself a founder of Cubism. In 1912 he and Jean Metzinger wrote Du "Cubisme", the first major treatise on the movement. He was also a member of Der Sturm, the group with which this painting is associated. Here, a familiar natural scene becomes a study in form rather than a literal view.
On your wall: Its modern, structured approach to landscape suits a study, living room or hallway where a considered, abstract piece can sit alongside contemporary or classic furnishings.
