Piet Mondrian, 1905
Before he turned to abstraction, Mondrian drew quiet Dutch landscapes. Here, bare trees and a low horizon frame a single figure.

This 1905 drawing shows Mondrian at an earlier stage, long before the geometric work he became known for. He made it with black chalk, softened with water in places, together with watercolour and gouache. Spindly, bare trees, a low horizon and a lone peasant fill the scene. These features reflect the influence of Vincent van Gogh, whose large exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam took place that same year. Landscapes were central to Mondrian's output then: he made around fifty a year between 1897 and 1907. The drawing is highly finished, which suggests it was made for commission or for exhibition and sale.
On your wall: Its restrained, earthy landscape suits studies, living rooms and quiet corners, particularly in modern interiors that welcome a note of history behind abstract art.
