This 1898 oil painting on canvas shows a woman standing on rocks at the water's edge, gazing across calm water towards a small rowing boat. To the right, poles for fishing nets stretch out along the shore. The setting is a fjord at Åsgårdstrand, and the scene is treated as a landscape, with the figure, the boat and the nets quietly sharing the view. It is a still, contemplative moment by the water.
On your wall: Its calm water and coastal subject suit living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and quiet reading corners where a restful view of the sea is welcome.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best-known work, The Scream, dates from 1893 and has become one of the most recognised and admired images in Western art. If you are drawn to bold, expressive pictures that stay in the memory, his work is a rewarding place to begin.
