This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige dates from 1857 and belongs to his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, where it is numbered 005 and sits in the spring section. It looks across the Sumida River from the grounds of Ekōin temple. A tall drum tower scaffold stands in the scene, and boats move over the water near the Moto-Yanagi Bridge. Far off, Mount Fuji completes the view. Hiroshige is remembered as the last great master of ukiyo-e, the tradition of Japanese woodblock printmaking to which this work belongs.
On your wall: Its river scene and distant mountain suit calm spaces such as a study, hallway, living room or bedroom, especially where Japanese or understated décor is wanted.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
