About this artwork

Hiroshi Yoshida made this woodblock print of Toshogu Shrine in 1937. It is a Japanese woodcut, a form in which the image is built up through carved blocks and printed by hand. Yoshida was a painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, counted among the leading artists of the shin-hanga style and especially noted for his landscapes. This print belongs to the collection of The San Diego Museum of Art, where it came as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Paige. It is a fairly compact, upright work, measuring about 37.6 by 24.9 cm.

On your wall: Its upright format and traditional woodblock character suit a study, hallway or calm living room, especially where Japanese art or other landscape prints are already hung.
