This woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida shows Daidōmon, the Taedong Gate, in Pyongyang, in present-day North Korea. Yoshida is regarded as one of the great artists of the shin-hanga style and is especially known for his landscape prints. He travelled widely and often turned his attention to places beyond Japan, rendering them in the traditional Japanese woodblock manner. This print belongs to that body of work, bringing a view of a gate in Pyongyang into the language of Japanese printmaking.
On your wall: It would suit a study, hallway or living room where a quiet, architectural subject and a touch of Japanese printmaking tradition are welcome.
