Vincent van Gogh, 1890
A generous bouquet of pale roses in an earthenware vase, set against a softly streaked green background.

This oil painting by Vincent van Gogh is a still life of a large bouquet of roses in an earthenware vase. The blooms are pale, mostly white, and a few loose roses lie on the table beside it. Behind them, the green background is worked in streaks. Van Gogh painted it in Saint-Rémy, while preparing to leave the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum for the quiet town of Auvers-sur-Oise. The choice of flowers and the colours reflect the optimism he felt about his future at that time. The painting is now owned by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
On your wall: Its soft pale blooms and fresh greens suit bedrooms, dining rooms and quiet living spaces, particularly where a gentle, natural note is wanted.
