Vincent van Gogh, 1889
Twisting poplars lean beneath a darkening autumn sky, painted in vivid colour and with energetic, charged brushwork.

Vincent van Gogh painted this autumn landscape in 1889, while he was staying at a psychiatric hospital near Saint-Rémy in southern France. At first he was restricted to painting in his room, but before long he was working outdoors again. Two poplars twist and lean against a sky that is growing dark. The colours are intense and the brushstrokes full of energy, conveying how strongly he responded to what he saw. It is an oil painting, and it shows his mature style at its fullest.
On your wall: Its strong colour and lively brushwork suit a living room, study or hallway where a landscape with real presence can hold the wall.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
