This still life shows sunflowers arranged in a vase, a subject Van Gogh returned to in 1888. The Munich version is painted in oil on canvas and belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections, where it hangs in the Neue Pinakothek. Van Gogh is known for bold colour and energetic, impulsive brushwork, and those qualities make a humble bunch of flowers feel lively and direct. The flowers fill the picture, inviting you to look closely at how the paint has been laid down.
On your wall: Its sunflower subject and warm, bold painting suit a kitchen, dining room or living space where a touch of cheerful colour is welcome.
