Painted in 1888, this oil on canvas shows the Langlois drawbridge spanning a canal at Arles. A woman with an umbrella stands on the bridge, and cypresses rise nearby. The grassy banks glow in warm orange, set against the water and the structure of the bridge. Van Gogh's bold colour and lively brushwork, for which he is known, give the scene its energy. It is a landscape in which a simple, everyday crossing becomes the centre of the picture. The painting belongs to the Wallraf–Richartz Museum.
On your wall: The warm oranges and calm canal scene suit living rooms, hallways and studies, and sit well beside natural wood or soft neutral walls.

In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
