About this artwork

This 1902 painting shows the port of Martigues, a marine landscape made in France by Francis Picabia. Picabia is best known as an avant-garde figure associated with Dada, and worked as a painter, writer, filmmaker, poet and publisher. Here he turns to a quiet harbour subject instead. It is a work that invites you to look at the place first, and then to consider how different this early landscape is from the work he later became known for.

On your wall: A harbour scene like this suits a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a calm landscape with a link to the sea.

About Francis Picabia

Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist whose work crossed many fields. He painted, wrote poetry, made films, published a magazine and worked with typography. He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
