About this artwork

This 1904 landscape by Francis Picabia shows barges on the Loing, a river in France, in the light of early morning, as the title tells us. It is a quiet river subject, and it offers a different side of an artist better known as a French avant-garde painter, writer and poet closely associated with Dada. Here the focus is on water, boats and the atmosphere of the hour, which invites a slow, attentive look.

On your wall: Its calm river subject and morning mood suit living rooms, studies and quiet hallways, particularly where a landscape is wanted to soften a modern interior.

About Francis Picabia

Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist whose work crossed many fields. He painted, wrote poetry, made films, published a magazine and worked with typography. He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
