About this artwork

This 1908 landscape shows an angler by the Loing at Moret, the river town also known as Moret-sur-Loing. The title tells us the subject: a figure fishing with a line beside the water. Francis Picabia is remembered as a French avant-garde painter, writer and poet closely associated with Dada, and here we see him working with a river landscape. It is a calm, outdoor subject, and the river setting gives the picture an unhurried, contemplative feel.

On your wall: A river landscape like this suits a living room, study or hallway, particularly where you want a calm, outdoorsy note alongside more modern furnishings.

He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
