Paul Klee, 1938
A simplified head and figure drawn in thick brown lines, set against a soft blue-green ground with a single patch of purple.

Paul Klee painted Little Hope in 1938, late in his career. A head and a figure are reduced to a few bold, thick brown lines, so the image reads at once while staying open and spare. The ground is a pale blue-green, interrupted by a patch of purple. The surface is rough, with frayed edges that give the picture a tactile, handmade quality. It is a portrait in the loosest sense: a human figure rendered with great economy, where line and colour carry the mood.
On your wall: Its pale blue-green ground and earthy brown lines suit a calm study, living room or hallway, especially where modern or minimal interiors need a quiet point of interest.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
