Sharpshooter is an oil painting by Winslow Homer from 1863, and it was his first war painting. It belongs to his Civil War work, a subject he explored in the 1860s. The title points to a lone marksman, which gives the picture a focused, watchful character. Homer is best known as an American landscape painter and illustrator, admired above all for his marine subjects. Today this painting is part of the Portland Museum of Art's collection of his work.
On your wall: Its quiet, historical subject suits a study, library or reading room, and it sits well in a hallway or a thoughtful corner of the living room.

He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly.
