Painted in 1884, this landscape by Ivan Shishkin shows a forest seen from a distance, with pines among the trees and sky above. It is an oil painting on canvas and belongs to the Tretyakov Gallery. Shishkin was a Russian Realist best known for his landscape subjects, and he was among the founding members of the Peredvizhniki. Here the subject is the woodland itself, together with the open sky that sits over it.
On your wall: Its forest and sky subject suits a calm living room, study or hallway, and works well in a home with natural materials or a love of the outdoors.
