About this artwork

This is a study of a rose known as the Quatre Saisons Lelieur, a variety whose name points to its habit of flowering more than once in the year. It belongs to Redouté's series Les Roses, a body of work devoted to roses and published as coloured engravings. Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, admired for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers. A watercolour of this rose is also held among the paintings in the cabinet des Vélins. The image suits anyone who enjoys botanical illustration and the careful, patient observation of a single plant.

On your wall: Its botanical subject suits a study, hallway, dining room or bedroom, particularly in calm interiors where a single flower study can sit quietly alone or in a group.
