About this artwork

Painted in oil on canvas in 1943, this abstract work by Arthur Dove is built from flat, jagged and wavy shapes in red, blue, yellow, green and orange. A dark diagonal band cuts across the composition, dividing the space as the title suggests and giving the bright colours a strong sense of direction. Dove is often considered the first American abstract painter, and this picture shows his readiness to work with pure shape and colour. The artist's signature, 'Dove', appears at the bottom. The painting is in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

On your wall: Its saturated colours and strong diagonal suit a living room, studio or hallway that needs a bold focal point, especially in modern interiors with plain, neutral walls.

About Arthur Dove

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
