Franz Marc, 1912
A single roe deer sits among angular shards of green, red and pink, with a pale moon above, in Franz Marc's 1912 vision of a garden.

Painted in 1912, Reh im Klostergarten (Deer in a Monastery Garden) shows a single roe deer set among faceted forms in green, red and pink. These angular planes suggest garden architecture around the animal, and a moon appears at the upper left. The style draws on Cubism and Futurism, breaking the scene into fragments of colour. Franz Marc made the work in oil paint on canvas, and it is held at the Lenbachhaus. It reflects his place among the key figures of German Expressionism.
On your wall: Its lively greens, reds and pinks suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, colourful piece with a gentle animal subject would bring some character.

Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker, counted among the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a journal whose name came to describe the wider circle of artists who worked together around it. His place in that movement is central to how he is remembered.
