Paul Klee painted this work in 1922 in tempera. Its title, which translates as "Dance of the Mourning Child II", pairs movement with sorrow, and it is classed as a portrait. The number in the title suggests a companion to an earlier piece. Klee was born in Switzerland and worked in Germany, and his individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. Today the work belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections and is shown at the Pinakothek der Moderne.
On your wall: It suits a study, reading corner or quiet living space where a contemplative piece in a modern, abstract style can be enjoyed up close.

Text based on Bavarian State Painting Collections.
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
