Painted in oil on canvas in 1881, this work by Ivan Aivazovsky combines two strands of his art: marine painting and history painting. The title tells us the subject, the burning of a Turkish flagship by Kanaris, and the picture depicts Konstantinos Kanaris himself. Aivazovsky was born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea and is remembered above all for his paintings of the sea, so it is fitting to find him here with a dramatic event on the water. The painting is held in the National Gallery of Athens.
On your wall: Its seafaring drama and historical subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where a strong focal piece is wanted.
