About this artwork

Painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, this work shows the railway bridge at Chatou, with pink-flowering chestnut trees given a place in its title. Renoir is counted among the leading French Impressionists, and a landscape like this sits naturally within that tradition of looking closely at outdoor scenes. The painting is now in the Musée d'Orsay. Its title points the eye to the blossoming trees and the bridge beyond, an everyday piece of modern infrastructure set within a gentle, leafy view.

On your wall: The soft pink blossom and landscape subject suit living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and dining areas, particularly where a calm, naturally lit space would welcome a touch of spring.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
