Painted in oil on canvas in 1889, this landscape shows a wheatfield with a reaper at work. The sun, the standing wheat and the mountains in the distance all feature in the scene, so the viewer takes in the figure, the crop and the open land around them together. Van Gogh was known for bold colour and expressive brushwork, and those qualities are worth looking for here. The painting belongs to the collection of the Van Gogh Museum.
On your wall: Its field-and-sun subject suits living rooms, dining areas and hallways, particularly where you want a landscape that brings a sense of open air indoors.
