The Mender is a drawing from around 1881 by Camille Pissarro. Throughout his career he turned to the French countryside and the people who lived there, and women sewing were a subject he returned to often, sometimes outdoors and sometimes seated by a window. Here he worked in pen and black ink and grey wash over graphite, adding touches of white gouache. At the left edge he wrote the word "lumière", a reminder of how closely he was watching the way natural light fell on his subject.
On your wall: Its soft greys, black and white suit calm spaces such as studies, hallways, bedrooms and reading corners, where a quiet figure drawing can sit comfortably beside modern furnishings.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
