Paul Klee painted The Wild Man in 1922. Klee was born in Switzerland and worked in Germany, and his individual approach drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. This work belongs to the group of his paintings held at the Lenbachhaus. Its title points to a single figure at the centre of the picture, and it is a good example of the playful, imaginative character his work is known for.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
