Towering cliffs frame a royal tiger hunt in the princely kingdom of Kota, watched from small boats on the water.

This painting shows a tiger hunt set against the dramatic cliffs of Kota, a small princely kingdom in Rajasthan. The king has just shot a tiger, which has been driven out of the forest by noisemakers carrying a firebrand. At the right, men keep bears at bay. In two small boats, women and musicians look on in admiration. It was made in the court of Ram Singh II, who reigned from 1826 to 1866, around 1830–40, using gum tempera, ink and gold on paper.
On your wall: Its cliffs, water and lively hunting scene suit a study, library, dining room or hallway where a detailed, story-filled landscape can be enjoyed up close.
