Hunters gather around their catch in a daguerreotype from around 1850, a quiet glimpse of rural French life with wine and a dead badger at their feet.

This daguerreotype, made around 1850 in France on a quarter plate, shows a group of hunters with their prey at their feet, being rewarded with wine. Hunt scenes were popular in many art forms in the mid-1800s. Badger hunting in France was then a working-class pastime, enjoyed by farm workers and villagers. Badgers were considered pests, and their meat was used in country cooking. The scene was clearly posed, yet the presence of the dead badger hints at something genuine behind the staging.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and rural subject suit a study, library, dining room or hallway, especially in traditional, rustic or country-style interiors.
