Painted in 1883, this oil on canvas shows an old cottage at Les Sablons, in the countryside around Veneux-Nadon. The title points to a modest rural dwelling, the sort of everyday corner that suited Sisley, whose work is almost entirely landscape. He was an Impressionist who cared deeply about painting outdoors, and the subject here reflects that attention to ordinary places. The work belongs to a group of paintings he made around Veneux-Nadon.
On your wall: Its rural subject suits a living room, study or hallway where a calm, traditional landscape would sit comfortably beside natural materials and softer furnishings.

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents. He was especially devoted to painting outdoors, and almost all his work is landscape. He is known for series made around Hampton Court on the Thames, the 1875 floods at Marly-le-Roi, and the Gothic church at Moret-sur-Loing, as well as Seine riverside scenes west of Paris.
