Alfred Sisley, 1892
A sunlit stretch of the Loing, lined with tall poplars beneath a blue sky and drifting white clouds.

Alfred Sisley painted this river scene in 1892, in oil on canvas. Tall poplars line the water, and a towpath runs alongside it, where a few small figures can be seen. Further along, a bridge crosses in the distance. Above it all, white clouds move across a blue sky, and the bright light gives the scene a warm, summery feel. It is an Impressionist landscape, and the loose, open handling of the scene suits the quiet of a day by the river.
On your wall: Its fresh greens and blues suit calm, light-filled rooms such as a living room, hallway or study, especially where you want a view of the outdoors.

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents. He was especially devoted to painting outdoors, and almost all his work is landscape. He is known for series made around Hampton Court on the Thames, the 1875 floods at Marly-le-Roi, and the Gothic church at Moret-sur-Loing, as well as Seine riverside scenes west of Paris.
