This floral painting shows blossoming almond branches, painted in oil on canvas in 1890. Van Gogh made it to celebrate the birth of his nephew, who was named after him: the son of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo. Flowering trees held a special meaning for him, standing for awakening and hope, and he took real pleasure in painting them. The work reflects the influence of Impressionism, Divisionism and Japanese woodcuts. It belongs to the Van Gogh Museum.
On your wall: A fresh, hopeful subject that suits bedrooms, nurseries, hallways and living spaces where a touch of spring and a sense of new beginnings is welcome.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
