About this artwork

This is Plate 102 from The Birds of America, John James Audubon's large-format series of bird illustrations, published between 1827 and 1838. It shows three blue jays perched on a branch hung with orange trumpet-creeper flowers. The plate is a hand-coloured engraving, and the original is printed on a full sheet with wide margins. Audubon planned the series as a pictorial record of the bird species of North America, and the plates were engraved in Scotland and England. Here the blue of the birds sits against the warm orange of the flowers.

On your wall: The blue and orange palette and the botanical subject suit a study, hallway, sitting room or dining room, especially where natural history or traditional prints are already part of the mix.
