About this artwork

This is Plate 2 of Birds of America by John James Audubon, a hand-coloured plate showing two Yellow-billed Cuckoos. They are perched on a pawpaw branch that carries its fruit, and one of the birds is in the act of catching a swallowtail butterfly. The plate belongs to Audubon's ambitious plan to make a pictorial record of the bird species of North America, and it is a fine example of the detailed illustration he became known for.

On your wall: Its natural subject and detailed drawing suit a study, hallway, reading room or any quiet corner where a bird and branch scene would be welcome.
