About this artwork

This is plate 157 from Audubon's Birds of America, and it shows Rusty Grackles: a male, a female and young birds, grouped together on a branch hung with dark berries. The plate appears on the full sheet, with its printed caption beneath the image. Birds of America was engraved in Scotland and England as a large-format book of colour plates, published between 1827 and 1838. Audubon's aim was to make a complete pictorial record of the bird species of North America, and this plate is one part of that ambitious project.

On your wall: The natural subject and the dark berries on a branch suit a study, hallway, reading nook or dining room where botanical and bird prints are already at home.
