This plate from John Gould's The Birds of Asia shows two small tits, identified as Psaltria leucogenys, resting on a hawthorn branch. It is a hand-coloured lithograph, a method in which the printed image is coloured by hand, and the plate is numbered 66 in the series. Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates produced by artists working alongside him. The composition is simple and focused, giving the two birds and the branch all the attention.
On your wall: Its natural subject of birds and a hawthorn branch suits studies, reading corners, hallways and calm living rooms, especially where botanical or nature-themed pictures are already hung.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
