This plate from The Birds of America shows a male and a female Goosander, also called the Buff-breasted Merganser, beside a waterfall. It is a hand-coloured lithograph, numbered Plate 411, and was printed by J.T. Bowen in Philadelphia. It comes from the 1840–1844 edition of the book, which carries the subtitle "from drawings made in the United States and their territories". Audubon was a naturalist and ornithologist who set out to make a full pictorial record of the bird species of North America, and this plate belongs to that wider project.
