About this artwork

This print by Ohara Koson shows a monkey catching the reflection of the Moon, a moment that draws the eye to the animal and its reach. Koson was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and he was at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements. The work measures 36.3 by 23.8 cm, a tall, narrow format. Our title gives the year as 1926, though the work is also listed as 1927.

On your wall: Its tall, narrow format and gentle subject suit a hallway, a reading corner or a calm bedroom wall, particularly in interiors that favour Japanese-inspired simplicity.
