Berthe Morisot shows a woman seated outdoors on a bench along the Avenue du Bois. She wears a straw hat and a blue dress, and beside her stands an open blue parasol. Behind her, the park avenue is suggested in soft, quick washes. The loose handling of the watercolour gives the scene a light, unhurried feel, as though caught in a passing moment. Morisot was a member of the circle of Paris painters who became known as the Impressionists, and her signature appears on the sheet. The work is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: The soft blues and airy, loose brushwork suit bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and reading corners where a calm, light-filled mood is wanted.

Berthe Morisot was a French painter and printmaker. She belonged to the circle of artists in Paris who came to be known as the Impressionists, and she took her place among them as a fellow painter. Her work is part of that group's story, and it suits anyone drawn to Impressionist art.
