Paul Signac, 1898
A sailing ship glides into Marseille's harbour at sunset, rendered in the tiny, glowing dabs of colour that Paul Signac helped make his own.

Signac's 1898 painting shows a sailing ship entering the harbour at Marseille as the sun sets. On the left rises the tower of Fort Saint-Jean, while masts stand softly in the hazy distance behind. The picture is painted in a pointillist manner, built from small touches of colour that merge into a warm, shimmering atmosphere when seen from a little way back. Signac was a French painter who, together with Georges Seurat, helped develop this technique. The work is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum.
On your wall: Its sunset light and harbour scene suit living rooms, studies and hallways, particularly where a calm, coastal note is wanted alongside warm, natural interiors.

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
