Philip Reinagle, 1800
Blue passion flowers, buds and an orange fruit stand before a fluted column in this hand-coloured botanical plate from 1800.

This plate comes from The Temple of Flora, or Garden of Nature, a book of picturesque, coloured botanical plates of selected plants, with descriptions by Robert John Thornton. Philip Reinagle painted the design, and James Caldwall engraved it. The plate was printed in 1800, though the book itself was published in 1807. The engraving is coloured by hand and shows the blue passion flower in bloom, with buds, leaves and an orange fruit arranged in front of a fluted column. The title is engraved beneath the image, as it would have appeared on the printed page.
On your wall: Its blue blooms, green foliage and touch of orange would suit a study, hallway, sitting room or dining room, especially where a classic botanical look is welcome.
