About this artwork

This plate comes from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, the large florilegium he is best known for. It is a hand-coloured botanical engraving showing three lily plants, each with its bulb visible beneath the stem. Labels on the sheet name them as Lilium Byzantinum flore multiplici, Lilium album and Scapus Lilii. The plate is taken from the special edition known as the Fürstenausgabe, in the copy held at the Seminarbibliothek Eichstätt. Showing the roots as well as the flowers lets you study each plant as a whole, much as a reader of the book would have done.

On your wall: Its botanical subject and hand-coloured detail suit studies, hallways, dining rooms and calm living spaces, especially where a quiet, traditional or naturalistic look is wanted.
