This is an oil study on board by Wassily Kandinsky, dated 1901 and linked to Munich, where the work is held in the city's gallery. It belongs to his landscape paintings from that year, and the title tells us it was made as a study for a larger painting of a sluice, or lock gate. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction, and a work from 1901 shows him at an earlier stage, working with a landscape subject. It is a good piece for anyone curious about the beginnings of an artist who later changed the course of modern art.
On your wall: Its landscape subject suits a study, hallway or living room where a quiet, early work by a modern artist can sit alongside more abstract pieces.
