This is a landscape painting of Binz auf Rügen at twilight, made by Wassily Kandinsky in 1903. It is painted in oil on canvas board, a support that suits small, quick studies of a place and its light. The title points to the hour between day and night, when colours soften and shapes begin to blur. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction, and he only began his painting studies at the age of 30, so this is an early work in his career. Today it belongs to the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne.
On your wall: Its dusk theme suits calm spaces such as a living room, bedroom or study, and it sits well alongside modern, abstract pieces.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
