Painted in 1914, this work by Juan Gris takes a bottle of anís as its subject, as the title tells us. It is made with oil, collage and graphite on canvas, a combination that brings painted surfaces, drawn lines and applied elements together in one composition. The picture is small and upright, measuring 41.8 by 24 centimetres. Gris, a Spanish painter born in Madrid who worked mostly in France, is closely associated with Cubism, and this piece sits within that way of seeing. Today it belongs to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character and upright format suit a study, a hallway or a living room where a compact, considered piece can sit beside books or shelves.
