Paul Klee made this work in 1932, and its title names three things: a hat, a lady and a little table. It is worked in gouache and watercolour on hessian, a coarse woven fabric, so the surface carries a distinct texture beneath the paint. Klee was born in Switzerland and worked in Germany, and his individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. Today the piece belongs to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where you want a quiet point of interest, particularly in contemporary or neutral interiors.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
