Ohara Koson made this print in Japan in the first decade of the twentieth century. It shows a yellow bird perched on a branch with white blossom, and the title names it as a Chinese oriole on a plum branch. It is a colour woodcut on paper: a black outline block was combined with blocks of colour. The image is tall and narrow, measuring 360 by 190 millimetres. It was published by Akiyama Buemon in Tokyo. Koson worked as a painter and woodblock print designer, and he was closely linked with the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements.
On your wall: Its slender upright format and the contrast of a yellow bird against white blossom suit a hallway, a bedroom or a quiet reading corner.
