This print shows two goldfish, known in Dutch as sluierstaarten, named for their long, veil-like tails. It is a colour woodblock print on paper, made in Japan by Ohara Koson, whose name appears on the sheet. It dates from between 1900 and 1936. The image measures roughly 23 by 24 centimetres, a nearly square format, and the work is described as a shikishiban, a type of Japanese print. Koson was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer, active at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements.
On your wall: Its gentle subject and near-square format suit a quiet corner such as a study, a hallway, a bedroom or a bathroom, where a small, calm focal point is welcome.
