This is a picture of parrots by Ohara Koson, a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements, which renewed the art of the Japanese woodblock print. Birds were a recurring subject in his work, and this piece belongs to that body of ukiyo-e bird imagery. It is a quiet, focused subject, and it invites you to look closely at the birds themselves.
On your wall: Its bird subject suits a living room, study or hallway where a calm, nature-inspired touch is welcome, especially alongside other Japanese-inspired or naturally styled pieces.
