Utagawa Hiroshige, 1891
A sudden shower catches people on a wooden bridge, and a man poles a raft of logs along the river below.

This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige shows a wooden bridge at the moment a shower breaks. Those crossing do what they can to keep dry, sheltering under umbrellas, a large hat or a straw mat. Below, a man pushes a raft of logs along the river. It belongs to a series of views of Edo and was made as a nishiki-e print, with a black key block and separate blocks for the colours. The block was cut by Fujiwara hori and the print was published by Kodama Matashichi. It is dated 1 September 1891.
On your wall: Its quiet everyday scene and the river setting suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where Japanese prints or calm, understated decor are already at home.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
