About this artwork

This colour woodblock print shows a mallard drake and two female ducks swimming together in shallow, rippling water, with reeds rising beside them. The image sits on a larger cream sheet that carries the artist's signature. It was made in Tokyo between 1900 and 1930 by Ohara Koson, a designer who worked at the forefront of the shin-hanga and shinsaku-hanga movements. The print combines a black line block with blocks of colour, and blind printing, in which pressed, uninked impressions add subtle texture to the paper. The image is small and quiet, and its pleasure lies in the gentle water and the grouping of the three birds.

On your wall: Its calm water scene and soft, natural subject suit a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a bathroom, particularly in light, understated interiors.
