About this artwork

This 1916 painting by the French artist Albert Gleizes takes a clown's head as its subject, a theme that gives the work a human focus. Gleizes was a leading voice in Cubism, and he co-wrote the first major treatise on the movement, Du "Cubisme", in 1912. He was also a founding member of the Section d'Or group. Seen alongside that background, the picture sits comfortably within the modern, abstract tradition he helped to shape, where a familiar figure becomes a way of exploring form.

On your wall: A thoughtful choice for a living room, study or hallway where you would like a figure-led piece with a modern, abstract character.
